Six categories, each with the things worth checking before you spend. Start where you already know what you need, or read the buying guides first.

Everything is grouped into six categories. Each one lists what we think is worth checking before you buy, because the specification that matters is rarely the one printed largest on the box.

Home & Living

Storage, lighting and furnishings chosen for the smaller rooms most UK housing actually has.

What we weigh up

  • Measured footprint, not just advertised dimensions
  • Assembly time and whether tools are included
  • Flat-pack durability after a house move

Tech & Audio

Everyday electronics compared on the specifications that change how a device feels to use.

What we weigh up

  • Battery life under realistic use, not lab figures
  • How long the manufacturer supports software updates
  • Repairability and spare part availability

Kitchen

Appliances and tools with running costs and counter space accounted for.

What we weigh up

  • Energy use across a year, not just the sticker price
  • Whether parts are dishwasher safe in practice
  • Noise level, which matters in an open-plan flat

How we decide what to list

Short version: we compare published specifications, we say when we have not used something, and commission never buys a ranking.

01

Define the job

We start from what the product has to do in a real UK home — the size of the room, the size of the bill — not from a keyword.

02

Compare on stated specifications

Figures come from the manufacturer or retailer and are labelled as such. Where sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the flattering one.

03

Separate fact from opinion

Specifications, third-party findings and our own judgement are kept visibly apart. We never describe hands-on testing we have not done.

04

Disclose the money

Paid links are labelled at the link and at the top of the page. Commission rates play no part in what we rank or recommend.
